In our previous article, we talked about why now is the very best time to learn to swim as an adult.  In the end, I told you everything you needed to know in order to learn to swim:

In today’s video, I will share more details about this method of learning and make a special announcement.  The following is a summary for readers.

Swimming is about understanding three simple elements. You start in the most basic form and build up and up into more complex arrangements.  When you are learning and you come to a roadblock, it is because of one of these reasons:

  1. You made the physical skill more important than the presence of mind which is the foundation of the program.

  2. You skipped ahead to a more complex part of BAM

We all know the saying that you must build on a strong foundation.  Swimming is no exception.  Confusion happens when we think the foundation has something to do with moving your arms and legs in a particular way.

The Foundation of swimming is the same as it is in life.  The foundation requires your presence of mind.  To know how to use your amazing brain to help you and not throw you into a tailspin. That tailspin keeps you stuck doing the same thing over and over.

For anyone who has taken a Foundation 1 swim course, they know the main goal of the course is to master the truth about the water along with the drama in the brain. Next, you’ll learn how to bring the two to work together.

To apply this to your life is to feel what is happening in your body.  As you read this, pause and notice your shoulders, the sensations in your neck or stomach, and notice where gravity pulls you into your chair.  This is bringing your presence of mind into your body right now.  From here, you can begin to step into something new.  The new thing, right now, maybe taking a breath and letting go of your shoulders to feel a little bit better.  Feeling better is a nice thing, right?
